Tum Chalo

Ye tumhara kiya hai,
tumhare safar mai hissa hai,
tum chalo...

tum aaj thoda khul jao,
khushi ki baarish main dhul jao,
Roshni ka ahtaram karo,
har mod, har mukaam karo,
uske peeche chalo, bina pooche chalo,
Dhoondh lo apne sparsh ko,
pehchan lo us harsh ko,
hawa se baatein karo,
karne do use kaano main khusar-phusar,
Awargi ko aise choom lo, ki taal se hat ke jhoomna aa jaye,
tum chalo...

Aakhen band kar ke chalo,
Bina bandish, bina fikr chalo
Chupke se apne kaano main kisi ka dard-e-zikr chalo,
fir laut jayenge bina chhode nishan, leke apna jahan apne saath
ek naya safar, ek nayi shuruwat,
Ab jo hai, wo tum ho
tum chalo, tum milo.

Dhobi Ghat - Most complete review

The Dhobi Ghat is an acquired taste. Either the film will sink into your skin like a slow ache or it will be bewildering and downright boring. Kiran Rao’s first film is an atmospheric mood piece. There is no overt plot – four lives randomly connect in Mumbai. There are fleeting moments of happiness and pain and the eventual realization that the journey never ends. The struggle to survive and to connect is eternal. The characters are Shai, played by Monica Dogra, an NRI investment banker who is back in Mumbai for, she says, a change of pace. Arun, played by Aamir Khan, an angst-ridden artist who has a one-night stand with Shai but has little affection or time for her the next morning. Munna, played by Prateik, a dhobi with dreams of becoming an actor. And Yasmin, a young married Muslim girl, played by Kriti Malhotra, who makes video diaries that Arun discovers. These people intersect in the disparate spaces of the city – posh art galleries and narrow gullies in slums; the dhobi ghat and high-rises. Munna and Shai make a connection but can something too fraught and tenuous to even be called a friendship, transcend class difference? The fifth character in the film is Mumbai, a teeming city of migrants that remains unknowable, alienating, harshly beautiful and brutally indifferent. Kiran Rao and cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray construct a rich and intimate portrait of the city. In places, the locations almost overshadow the characters – there is a terrific shot of Arun walking down the bustling Mohammed Ali Road during Ramzan. In another scene, Munna covers his shanty from the torrential rain as local trains whiz by. Rao also observes human behavior keenly – so when Shai first asks Munna to sit down in her up-market apartment, he hesitantly feels the sofa before placing himself down. And when Shai’s disapproving maid serves them tea, she brings one nice cup and one glass that befits Munna’s status.Prateik is achingly lovely as Munna but the star of the film is the luminous Kriti Malhotra who revealingly loses the hope and shine in her eyes. This saga of love and longing is punctuated by a haunting background score created by Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla. What doesn’t work as well is the pacing. Rao’s build-up of characters is painfully slow with the first 30 minutes or so being the most problematic. Some of the early scenes are clumsy and the disjointed narrative just isn’t engaging enough. I was also confused by the suggestion that Munna is having a relationship with an older woman customer – so does the dhobi routinely offer more than just clean clothes? Intriguingly, Aamir Khan, otherwise such a fine actor, strikes a false note.
With constantly furrowed brows, he seems to be performing at a different pitch from everyone else. You can almost feel the weight of being in an art house film on his shoulders – the early scenes with him and Monica are particularly awkward.Still, if you are willing to have patience, Dhobi Ghat comes together nicely. It has a poetry and melancholy that stays with you. I recommend that you give it a shot.

Embarrassment Paradox

In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of.
In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of.
- Confucius (551-479 BC)

India has extreme poverty and wealthiest people in the world...
What should we ashamed of?

Can you slay ideas?

With torture you can hurt the flesh
but not the spirit;

With bullets you may pierce the flesh
but not the spirit;

You can bore many holes in the body with your bullets,
but not one single hole in the heroism which bears
the body to the bullet:

A hero is immortal,
he lives within the people
who give the country heroes.
You slay men, you butchers!

But can you slay ideas?

Khush raho! (Stay happy!)

Khush raho! (Stay happy!), that's the most favorite of all blessings which elders in my family have to offer. I asked my grandfather once, "Why do you always bless me with Khush raho? You can bless me with Dirghayu bhava (live long!) or Yashasvi bhava (be prosperous!)..." He smiled at my naive question. He said, "I will answer your question, but before that tell me something... what good is a long life with sufferings in it? Or what good is prosperity if you still feel discontented?" These philosophical thoughts lead my 7 years old brain into hesitancy. Grandpa could clearly see confusion on my face. He explained,
"When you play cricket, does that make you happy?",
I nodded.
"But when it's raining and you cannot play, how do you feel?"
"Unhappy"
"But why does it make you unhappy? You can watch TV during that time..."
"Yes, but it's not like playing cricket..."
"BINGO!"

Grandpa continued, "If you want to play cricket, then that will make you happy and nothing else. There are countless small things in life which make us happy, without those things, life becomes sad, monotonous. So, underlying meaning of my blessing is, may you get all those things which make you happy, after all happiness is essence of life." He said it smiling with gentle and loving pats on my cheeks.

I understood the importance of happyness in life that day. And also to care about all those small things in life which make us happy. The movie 'The Pursuit of Happyness' tells the same thing but from a different perspective. You might have to work extremely hard to get that one moment, which you call happyness.
Common thing in both the versions is Karma. They both talk about Karma, it's our Karma which directly or indirectly leads us to happyness.

Having said that, recently, i stumbled upon an article which tells a totally different approach to happyness. The article quotes, "happiness arose out of all I didn’t want or need, not all I did". May be it's an absolute truth or a relative truth.. but whatever it is, it makes sense in a way. Something similar is taught in classes of creative writing. Chasing ideas is like chasing butterflies. More you chase them, more they go away from you. But if you sit in one place, peacefully, they will come to you themselves.

The point i am trying to make in this blog post, by illustrating two entirely different approaches to happyness is, may be Happyness is a purely relative concept. So, the pursuit to happyness becomes inherently relative. So, don't seek advice from others when you need happyness, just follow your heart, do something which makes you happy and finally you will be happy.

The bewitched mind is on its way to dream
The bewitched mind has bewitched thoughts

It beats crazily and takes crazy breaths
Why does sleep run away from the crazy twisting and turning
The bewitched eyes long to watch bewitching sights
through the bewitching windows.
The bewitched mind is on its way to dream

In this crazy world, I wish I had some bewitching company
With this cunning crowd around, I wish your hands were in mine
Wish there was a bewitching melody and a bewitching composition
My bewitched feet desire to dance to the bewitching tunes of bewitching songs
The bewitched mind is on its way to dream

I wish the darkness was bewitching and so was the silence
I wish quivering lips go easy, the intoxication is bewitching
One bewitched veil, slowly tells us of the break of dawn with a bewitched face
The bewitched mind is on its way to dream

Thesis

Submitting thesis is a strange feeling.
It's like adding a drop of water to an ocean... a drop doesn't make any difference to the ocean but without that drop, the ocean is incomplete.

To the streets of Kaiserslautern...

It's been 3 years in Germany, I wake up every morning on my comfortable bed in my temperature controlled room. I am sure, almost everyday, that when i will enter in the shower and turn on the tap of hot water, i will get water and that water will be hot. Unlike India, where at the last moment you get reminded, "oh, i forgot to turn on the geyser or there is no water supply today!"

After shower, when i enter the kitchen for breakfast, i know for sure that hot plates will turn on and there will not be any electricity cuts.
I know for sure that the bus which is supposed to come at 8:15 AM, no matter how bad the weather is, will come at 8:15 AM and i will reach my lab at 8:25 AM and can start working at 8:30 AM. No traffic congestions, less pollution, no overcrowding in buses.

This is applicable in every aspect of daily life, everything very well planned, on time and predictable.

Now, let's see this scenario once again from a different perspective.
When i wake up, i don't have anyone around me to whom i can wish to have a good morning. I don't find my mother who used to bring a cup of tea and wake me up with her motherly affection. When i go out on the streets, i say hello to the city and city says hello to me and then we move on. After so many years, still we could not become friends. Like, 2 strangers, who live together but never talk. When Germany beats France in Football, i feel good, but when India beats England in cricket, that's unmatched happiness.

Perhaps we have all the comforts but where is the compassion? I am living with people who are friendly but where are the friends? I own a lot of things but what about being owned by someone?

This city gives you everything but makes you lonely, as if you have everything but no one to share with. On the other hand, back at home, you might not have everything but still you get everything because you have people who are willing to share what they have and you don't have.

Working Class Hero - John Lennon

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and class less and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Yes Madam, Sir. Salute!

When I Asked God for Strength

When I asked God for strength
He gave me difficult situation to face.

When I asked God for Brain & Brawn
He gave me puzzle in life to solve.

When I asked God for Happiness
He showed me some unhappy people.

When I asked God for Wealth
He showed me how to work hard.

When I asked God for Favors
He showed me opportunities to work hard.

When I asked God for Peace
He showed me how to help others.

God gave me nothing I wanted
He gave me everything I needed.

~By Swami Vivekananda

The Prayer of an Unknown Confederate Soldier

I asked God for strength that I might achieve.
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

I asked for riches that I might be happy.
I was given poverty that I might be wise.

I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

Someday...

Someday I'll wish upon a star,
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me,
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
Away above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me,

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly,
Bird fly over the rainbow, why then, oh why can't I
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow,

Why, oh why can't I?

Why do the relations fall apart?

May be the title of this posting is not very appropriate. Then, why didn't i change it? Let's see why!

The title suggests one more analysis of relationships and their falling apart. But actually, there might be a million reasons for a relation to fall apart. Obviously, no writer has enough ink in his/her pen to write all them down. These analysis are always subjective. From a particular point of view. I am trying to present one such point of view here.

When two people, come together, get into a relationship, both the partners have an image of a person they are looking in their other partner. This leads to expectations, to be precise, unbalanced mutual expectations. Now, here is the problem. Having mutual expectations is not a problem but imbalance is a problem. And severity of the problem is directly proportional to the heights of expectations. The higher expectations we have, more imbalanced they are...

So, you see the key is, trying to keep expectations lower. Trying to accept the person as he or she is... trying to respect the other persons identity rather than changing it as per our idea of perfect partner...

Think about it...

Tere utaare huye din - By Gulzar Saab

Tere utaare hue din
tange hain lawn mein ab tak
na wo purane hue hain
na un ka rang utra…
Kahin se koi bhi seewan abhi nahi udhri

Ilaaichi ke bahut paas rakhe pathar per
zara si jaldi sarak aaya karti hai chhaon
zara sa aur ghana ho gaya hai wo pauda
main thora thora woh gamla hatata rehta hoon
fakira ab bhi wahin meri coffee deta hai

Gilehrion ko bula ker khilata hoon biscuit
Gilehrian mujhe shaq ki nazar se dekhti hain
wo tere haathon ka mus jaanti hongi….

kabhi kabhi jab utarti hai cheel shaam ki chat se
thaki thaki si zara deir lawn mein ruk ker
safaid aur ghulabi muswande ke paudon mein ghulne lagti hai
ke jaise barf ka tukra pighalta jaye whisky mein

main scarf din ka gale se utaar deta hoon
tere utaare hue din pehan ke ab bhi main
teri mehak mein kai roz kaat deta hoon

Tere utaare hue din
tange hain lawn mein ab tak

Wrong Prefession

I heard it somewhere, "When you are not able to handle the stress in the work you are doing, then you are in wrong profession..." how true is that...
Why is it so difficult to see such simple facts of life, especially when they are right in front of us... perhaps the problems or stress related to that work keep us so involved that we don't think or see any thing else.

A letter to her

Hi,
There are some things are better expressed face to face, but since you want to know them beforehand, i will try to explain them on email.

I am not sure if you are actually aware of a this feeling or not, but when a human being is living in an illusion for a very long time and all of a sudden that illusion gets shattered, it's painful. The intensity of pain can only be felt not expressed in words.

I was living in the illusion that Computer Securities is the only thing which i am good at. I am very bad in EE. I am very bad in any other field. But this was the only thing which i loved, i studied, i knew.

After giving the exam of Security Engineering, my illusion got crushed. As if, someone has taken everything from me. I was left with nothing at all.

But it's ok. May be that was really an illusion. Illusions are meant to be broken one day. Mine is also broken. Atleast, now i will never think of Securities again.

The thing which i wanted to talk about is, was i really "that" bad that i deserved to be failed? I know Proff. was kind enough to pass me. But please recall how was i passed? I entered in the room. Proff. began with the words, "I am sorry, you are failed, you know nothing...." and then a huge list of things came up which as per his standards i had no clue. Then all of a sudden 'Needham-Schroeder' (which was explained in writing on piece of paper) came up... then he said, "Oh no no.. you know this...", then he looked at you. You scribbled 4.0 on paper and he agreed on that. And that's how i passed.

You know, when i entered in the room to listen my result, i kept thinking for 1 long minute, that Proff. is joking with me. The next sentence he will say will be, "Oh! i was joking... don't worry you are pass". But that never came up.

Anyways, i will not waste your time anymore with my nonsense.

Best Regards,
Shubhmoy

Can engineers be 'Touchy feely'?

-an article written by Chetan Bhagat

I remember the incident - I was in a restaurant, and one girl in our group was especially charming. So I, like any other male, tried to put on a wooing act. You know the routine, a nanosecond extra eye contact, a few more nods to whatever she says, and attempts to throw in those one-liners which you know you wouldn’t if she weren’t there. And it seemed to be working. She leaned forward when she spoke to me, and every now and again, we’d have a small conversation of our own, separate from our group. She laughed at my approach with the fork and knife, and I teased her about her hair band, which had little teddy bears.

Yes, we were flirting. A while later, she asked me the question - what did I study? I said engineering, without any particular meaning attached to it. And then like a cold metal rail, she went stiff. My jokes weren’t funny any more. Her eyes wandered to everyone else.

What was it?
Why? Why? Why?
Two days later, I still couldn’t get over my great start that had dissipated listlessly upon mentioning my education. Engineer? What was wrong with that?

My mom had wanted me to become one since I was five! I had to call her. ‘So what happened to you that day, hot and cold, missie?’ And then she said, trying to be nice, ‘Well, it’s just that I am skeptical about engineers as friends. I don’t know, they can be, you know, very logical and everything…not very touchy feely’.

Not touchy-feely. Now what the heck did that mean? Well, she obviously did not mean it literally, since girls don’t really suggest that sort of stuff, certainly not in the first meeting across the table. I guessed it was something to do with feelings, sort of having an emotional side. The stereotype being, the nerdy guy who sees relationships like laws of physics, to whom love is just a bunch of chemicals going crazy in your brain, and getting to know a person means obtaining their bio-data.

It’s time to set the record straight. It’s true that a lot of what engineers study (and they end up studying quite a lot), has to do with formulaes, laws and numbers. No matter how hard we try, some of the vocabulary we read all day gets into our language. So when my mother said, ‘Are you getting married next year or not?’ I was liable to say, ‘Well, at this moment in time, the probability is relatively low,’ and felt it was completely normal to say it. And when my sister went sari shopping and couldn’t explain the shade she wanted, I told the shopkeeper the percentages of pink, orange and red in the sari.

Yet, ladies, I don’t think we’re bad at relationships, love and getting to know people. We too, can be touchy-feely, as that is part of our education as well. The reason for this is that most engineering students live in the ultimate educator - boy’s hostels.

Now, let me explain how this plays into this ‘touchy-feely’ thing. Relationships. Imagine eating, sleeping, brushing your teeth, bathing (ok rarely this one) and partying with the same people all the time. So, when you are kicking that bathroom door down for the tenth time, or when you stand in line for ‘gulab-jamuns’ in the mess, and when you are done with the vodka bottle and sharing all your secrets, you know it is good practice. Yes, hostels maketh the man.

So, next time you are in a flirtatious situation with the techno types, go on, flirt a bit more. Of course, I am biased towards my kind, but if you find the conversation turning too geeky, just ask them, ‘So, what were your hostel days like?’ and chances are, you’ll see a heart behind the calculator.

Coming back to my missie, I thought of what would make me win her over. Flowers… too cheesy. Music… don’t know her taste (nor trust mine). Teddy bears… don’t even go there. Desperate for some good lines, I just turned it right back at her. ‘Yes, I know what you are saying about engineers. The thing is, unless people with depth like you start hanging out with us, we won’t get any better. Can you meet me some time for some touchy/feely… oops, I mean coffee/tea?’

She giggled. When they giggle, you have won.

Hence proved.
